EIZO's history has its roots in two companies: Nanao Denki (Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture) established in December 1967 and Hakui Denki (Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture) established in March 1968. Also, the company name from 1973 to 2013 was Nanao, and long-time PCWatch readers will be familiar with the company name Nanao.
When the company was founded, it started with subcontracted production of 14-inch black-and-white televisions. In 1978, it is also known for OEM production of the hit arcade game "Invader Game", and it was the company that made the screen of the invader game, which was originally black and white, color for the first time.
In May 1985, after starting OEM production of CRT displays for computers, the original EIZO brand products were sold. The launch of the 12-inch CRT display "7030" for the European market was the first development of its own brand.
Starting in Germany, it expanded to Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Sweden, Greece, etc., and solidified its foundation in the European market. In the same year, it also expanded to the US market. It is said that the method of selling the display together with the graphics board developed in-house that can perform high-resolution display was successful.
At a time when the maximum size of a CRT display was 14 inches, the display range of 16 inches was achieved by increasing the resolution with a graphic board. It was a big hit.
By the way, the brand name "EIZO" comes from the Japanese word for "video". Based on the video technology that the company has cultivated, it shows the determination to create excellent video products. In addition, the colors used in the current EIZO logo represent the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) that make up the three primary colors.
Then, in July 1991, under the NANAO brand, sales of computer CRT displays for the domestic market began. In April 1996, the brand was unified into EIZO, both in Japan and overseas. In March 1997, the company started development, production and sales of liquid crystal displays for computers.
The price of the first liquid crystal display "FA-1020" is 1 million yen. Although it failed as a business, it could be said to be one of the efforts that proved EIZO's DNA to aggressively tackle the latest technology.
In March 2007, a new 6-story R&D building was completed at the head office in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, with an investment of 2.5 billion yen. The company is working to strengthen development capabilities and improve development mobility, efficiency, and design quality.
