The impetus for starting Houzz was a renovation of my own home. In 2006, the Tatarkos purchased a 60-year-old house in Pal Alto. In the case of the United States, it is common for owners to renovate second-hand properties after purchase. However, they were unable to find a home renovation company that would meet their expectations. "I collected information about housing renovation on the Internet, but the content was very scarce. Information on architects, designers, interior contractors, etc. is scattered, and it is not satisfactory for users. We managed to find a contractor and remodeled it, but the completed house was far from our ideals. Tatarko is the CEO and co-founder of Houzz, an online platform that connects remodelers with housing industry professionals. Houzz was founded in 2009. A friend who was dissatisfied with home renovations as well as the couple, and local experts who were frustrated by the outdated system of ordering orders in the construction industry, got together and exchanged ideas. . “My biggest complaint when remodeling was that I had a hard time finding the right information. I had no choice but to refer to word of mouth for the reputation of builders. I am convinced that it is necessary to create a community by launching a platform where both users and specialists can communicate smoothly and share information." (Mr. Tatarko) Save renovation photos and request renovation from the contractor The Houzz site is also a database of designers, architects, and renovation contractors. They have posted more than 6 million photos and have about 700,000 registered professionals in 63 categories. Users can search by category such as "kitchen", "bath", "bedroom", "living room" and save their favorite photos. In addition, you can search for contractors from industries such as "architects & architectural designers", "interior designers", and "kitchen & bathroom designers", refer to their project achievements, and make inquiries. Users can ask questions about their favorite vendors on the site, interact with other users who are interested in the same vendors, and place orders on the Houzz site. Single interior items such as lighting fixtures can be purchased through Houzz or from external e-commerce sites. The Houzz site also features feature articles on renovations, making it highly useful as a portal for renovations. Mr. Tatarko points out that Houzz's focus is on "easy-to-see and easy-to-search visuals." Dozens of tags are attached to each photo, and by clicking the tag icon in the photo, you can obtain detailed data such as product information, specifications, and dealers. “You can’t talk about remodeling without visuals. Users look at a lot of photos to form an ideal image of themselves. We tried to create a system that would allow us to match with specialists who would give form to the ideal design. My husband, who is a technical engineer at eBay, was in charge of this work."
